How We Can Help – Supporting Families in North Australia

Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia (RMHC NA) is committed to providing families with better access to the care and support they need when their children are facing serious health challenges. Our mission is to ease the burdens families encounter by eliminating barriers to care, strengthening their connections, and promoting healing during times of crisis.

We offer a range of vital programs across North Australia, each carefully designed to provide comfort and essential support to families in need. These programs include:

  • Ronald McDonald House Program
  • Ronald McDonald Family Rooms
  • Ronald McDonald Learning Program
  • Ronald McDonald Hospitality Cart
  • Ronald McDonald Family Retreat

Our aim at RMHC NA is to reduce the emotional and financial strain that illness or injury can impose on families, helping them stay together and remain close to the medical care their child requires.

Ronald McDonald House Program

Ronald McDonald Houses offer a home-away-from-home for families with seriously ill or injured children. We provide accommodation for families who need to travel for their child’s treatment or for mothers experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Our Houses ensure families can remain close to the care their child needs during these difficult times.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms

The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in Townsville and Mackay provide a safe, welcoming space for families to rest, refresh, and reconnect when their child is in hospital. These rooms are just moments from the child’s bedside and equipped with essentials such as sleep-rooms for overnight stays, fully stocked kitchens, laundry and bathroom facilities, and comfortable common areas to reduce the stress of hospital stays. These spaces offer families fleeting moments of normalcy—sharing a hot shower, enjoying a meal together, or simply getting a quiet moment away from the clinical environment.

  • Over 7,750 visits were made to the Townsville Family Room, and over 400 families in Mackay

Ronald McDonald Learning Program

When a child faces serious illness or injury, time away from school can cause them to fall behind their peers. The Ronald McDonald Learning Program helps bridge this gap by providing free one-on-one tutoring with qualified teachers, tailored to each child’s needs. The program builds confidence, supports learning recovery, and helps children return to school ready to succeed.

Impact – 2024

  • More than 1,000 children across Australia accessed the program in 2024.
  • In North Australia, children supported through the program received over 40 hours of personalised tutoring each, giving them the chance to catch up on critical learning missed during treatment.
